What are carbon credits?
Carbon credits are certificates that give the holder the right to emit one ton of carbon dioxide or an equivalent amount of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
Carbon credits play a critical role in net-zero goals globally. Ja.Ca.Mbè is producing carbon sinks that capture CO2 emissions, which are then converted to carbon credits. These carbon credits can be purchased by different organisations and entities to be utilised for offsetting their carbon emissions.
The voluntary market

As voluntary carbon credit markets are unregulated, NGOs have established certification mechanisms like the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Gold Standard to oversee how carbon offsetting projects are structured and implemented. These standards ensure projects are verified by independent auditors for additionality, and permanence, and prevent double counting.

Generating Carbon Credits
In voluntary markets, carbon credit-generating projects fall into two categories:
- REDD+ projects are conservation initiatives aimed at preventing CO2 emissions by halting forest degradation. They are considered projects of lower value due to subjective measurability criteria.
- CO2 removal projects, such as afforestation and reforestation initiatives, extract CO2 from the atmosphere in a measurable way and are seen as the only credit-generating projects with a solid scientific basis.
